What I've Read
1. Technology and the Law by Stefanie Olsen:
I was interested in this story because I am intrigued by technology. I wanted to see what the law was doing to technology. I found out that there are a lot of regulations being made on all kinds of technology from video games to vending machines and the law will only continue to increase as technology advances.
2. America's Challenges 2010 by David E. Sanger:
I wanted to learn about the presidents agenda and read this article. Not only did it give me a better idea of what the president has to do on a day -to-day basis, it also made me feel some empathy for the president. Any given president is given many problems that have to be solved, so he or she, though, so far, only he, has to juggle them. Our current president, however, had it worse. He entered his presidency already dealing with an ongoing war. Then many other domestic and foreign dilemmas. Once the oil spill occurred, the president had to deal with that problem promptly because the public is quick to criticize. So, next time you find yourself scolding the president, stop and ask yourself--Can I do it all?
3. Locked Away Forever by Adam Liptak:
This article is crazy and exposed me to some, though gross, necessary knowledge of crimes that are committed by juveniles. These crimes range from sexual assault to armed burglary.
4. Driven to Distraction by Matt Richtel:
This article talks about the dangers in driving. It talks about how texting distracts many people and has been a great cause of car related accidents. The law has taken action and put restrictions on cell phone uses while driving. Though that may be inconvenient, I think it is very important and a positive movement for the greater good of car travelers.
5. Origami Observatory by Robert Irion:
This is an interesting article in the field of science. It is astounding to me that NASA is building a telescope that is a billion times bigger(exaggeration) than Hubble, an already huge telescoope. The James Webb telescope is interesting and made me do some research at NASA's web site. It will see in infrared, and its goal is to see further than any land based telescope or even Hubble can see.
What I'm Reading
6. Is Your Lunch Causing Global Warming? by Elisabeth Rosenthal:
Reading New York Times Upfront, I came across this article. This article was very eye-opening to me. For one, never once in my life did I stop to think how much the food I eat contaminates the earth if at all. Well, after reading this article I have learned quite a bit. People, when thinking about global warming, often blame the big industries. Well research has been done and scientists have found that the food you eat for lunch(any meal), from the processing to the shipping, pollutes the environment more that the major industries do.
What I Plan on Reading is
Revolution Postponed by Stephen S. Hall:
It is a short story about the genome project and it seems interesting to me and I would like to learn more about it. Also,
this upcoming quarter I want to challenge myself some more. I am satisfied with the quick improvements that I have made, and I think that I can handle reading a novel. Though I have an idea of what I want to read, something to do with science, biology in particular, I am not positive on exactly what I am going to read.
